With the assistance of a very generous donation from Alexander Patrick and the Trustees of the Patrick Trust, the Friends have now purchased two memorials to mark the burials which are located within the lawned areas of Sections C.1. (C/E) and C.1. F/C), which are on either side of the main drive and just past the War memorial. We were often asked why there were no burials in these obvious spaces, and the answer is, that there are in fact burials but no memorials. These are the Common Graves - burials which have taken place with the appropriate funeral service, accrding to a person's religion, but where the deceased had no family or circumstances prevented the family from affording a funeral. These burials include, among others, all the First World War soldiers who are named on the two Screen Walls around the Cross of Sacrifice. With the kind permission of the Bereavements Department, the Friends purchased these memorial stones to represent all those burials, so that they now have, at least a collective memorial to their passing.
